Rueda level description

This year we use letters to describe the level of the rueda classes: A, B, C, D and  Master
The reason for this is that people tend to read very different things into the traditional description of what it means to be for example an intermediate or advanced dancer.

For everyone to have fun AND challenges, everyone must follow classes at their level of dancing.

The blue classes do not have any rueda level requirement, but some of them have restrictions (i.e. women only). Theory classes (dark blue) are without restrictions, and the purple salsa classes are for intermediate salsa dancers.

See what is required to attend rueda classes at the different rueda levels.

RUEDA class description

PREREQ. REPETITION
One last chance to repeat the moves that you must know to participate at this level throughout the week-end. You should know the moves before you come to this class.

NEW MOVES
New rueda moves selected by the instructor. On level B, expect a majority of the new moves to be standard moves (from the Rueda Standard).

NEW STD
Introdution to new moves that are added to the Norwegian Rueda Standard this year.

FESTIVAL DE RUEDA
Practicing the rueda moves that have been taught on this level. NO NEW MOVES, a bit repetition, and mainly dancing rueda.

STREET RUEDA
Fun stuff, not complicated casino moves, but cuban rueda moves for street dancers (who do not go to dance schools). Typically enchufla con this, enchufla con that, and maybe a yogúr with some extra flavor.

RUEDA STYLING
Focus on HOW the basic moves are danced in a rueda, NOT on learning more new moves.

RUEDA PERFORMANCE (only advanced dancers)
Focus on being prepared for a rueda performance, like the rueda contest on Saturday 6th.

SON RUEDA (only advanced dancers)
A rueda dancing Son, not Salsa (Casino). Participants must know the basics of Son, at least corresponding to the level of the regular Son class given on friday.

CRUZADO
This is a form of rueda where there are two different groups in the same circle, every second couple being in one group, and changing partner only within your group. The two groups dance in counter-rythm, one of them starting on beat number 1, and the other one beat number 5. Fun, but challenging.

WORKSHOP description

REGGAETON
The most popular dance for the young crowd in Cuba today

SON
One of the ancestors of the Salsa. Son is a contratiempo dance.
Se an example here (but don't expect to learn all of this in one class:)

CASINO (intermediate salsa level)
Salsa, Cuban style, for couples.

CUBAN LADY STYLING
Focus on making the dancing look good. For women.

CUBAN BODY MOVES
Focus on dancing with your body, not only feet and hands. For women.

RUMBA
The traditional cuban dance, also very useful to improve the quality of your moves in salsa and rueda.

AFROCUBAN
A taste of the AfroCuban dance inheritage, with the different moves of the different Orishas.
See video of Ariel demonstrating some moves.

AFROSALSA
Focus on using rumba / AfroCuban moves in salsa (casino) dancing.

LATIN FUN
This class is like a warm-up class with focus on enjoying the dance. Elements from different dances, as the instructor likes to use it. Used as pre-party class Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

THEORY:

The history of Rueda de Casino
A review of how Rueda de casino started. Video of the founders of the dance, who origined in Miramar, Havana, Cuba.

Cuban music
DJ Javier will talk about cuban music and play samples. For salsa-DJs, and others who would like to know more about cuban music, with focus on salsa / timba.
